SBA Underwriter

Summary:

The SBA Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and risk-assessing SBA and USDA loan requests of moderate complexity in accordance with the Company’s credit risk management strategy, internal credit policy, and SBA/USDA program requirements.

 This role applies sound credit analysis and established underwriting practices to evaluate borrower creditworthiness, identify risk, and support appropriate loan structuring. The SBA Underwriter works collaboratively with lending and credit partners and escalates complex or higher-risk transactions as appropriate.

 The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in commercial credit analysis and Government Guaranteed Lending, with the ability to manage multiple transactions in a deadline-driven environment.

Job Functions:

  • Underwrite SBA 7(a), 504, Express, and USDA loan requests of moderate complexity in alignment with internal policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Analyze borrower financial statements, tax returns, and projections to assess repayment capacity and key risk factors.
  • Evaluate collateral, guarantor support, and loan structure to ensure alignment with credit standards.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and well-supported credit memoranda for approval.
  • Apply SBA SOPs, USDA requirements, and internal credit policy to standard underwriting scenarios.
  • Collaborate with Business Development Officers and internal partners to gather required information and resolve routine credit issues.
  • Ensure credit packages are complete, accurate, and compliant prior to submission.
  • Assist in structuring transactions and identifying risk mitigants under guidance of senior credit personnel.
  • Escalate complex credit issues or exceptions to senior underwriters or management as appropriate.
  • Maintain working knowledge of SBA/USDA program updates and underwriting best practices.
  • Must complete all required training, including Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-money Laundering training, suitable to their position within the bank.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or related field required (or equivalent experience).
  • 3–5 years of experience in commercial credit analysis or underwriting, with exposure to SBA and/or USDA lending.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements, cash flow, and collateral for small to mid-sized commercial credits.
  • Experience preparing credit write-ups or underwriting summaries preferred.
  • Formal credit training or completion of a bank credit program is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of financial statement analysis, cash flow, and debt service coverage
  • Ability to identify key credit risks and recommend appropriate mitigants under guidance
  • Understanding of SBA 7(a), 504, and USDA loan programs
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial analysis
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Collaborative team player with adaptability in a changing environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with loan origination systems preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Work Arrangement:

  • This position is remote.
  • Occasional travel may be required for in-person training or meetings.
