Loan Review Officer

Summary:  The Loan Review Officer is responsible for conducting independent reviews and evaluations of loans within the bank’s loan portfolio. This position ensures that loans are being originated, structured, and maintained in accordance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements. The Loan Review Officer will identify areas of risk, assess the quality of loan assets, and recommend corrective actions to mitigate risks. This role supports the company’s risk management strategy and enhances credit quality control.


Job Functions:

  • Conduct regular reviews of individual loans within the bank’s loan portfolio to evaluate credit risk, asset quality, and compliance with company policies and established regulatory guidelines and loan review procedures.
  • Identify and assess the risks inherent in loan origination and administration processes. Highlight loans that present increased risk to the institution and recommend mitigation strategies when appropriate.
  • Ensure that loans are accurately risk rated for credit quality, and that proper risk management techniques are applied throughout the loan life cycle; recommending appropriate risk ratings based on findings.
  • Ensure that loan documentation, underwriting, and approvals comply with internal policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDIC, OCC, or FRB).
  • Identify loan covenant violations and financial and loan documentation exceptions discovered through the loan review process.
  • Document conclusions clearly and concisely and communicate results to appropriate loan personnel and Bank management.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting detailed loan review reports to management, outlining the portfolio’s risk profile, trends, and credit quality issues, as well as summarizing loan review findings, recommendations, and conclusions.
  • Make recommendations for improving lending practices, policies, and procedures to enhance risk management and ensure compliance. Track and follow up on recommended corrective actions and policy changes.
  • Work closely with loan officers, portfolio managers, credit administration, and risk management teams to ensure proper credit review and risk mitigation procedures are in place and executed effectively.
  • Participate in special loan reviews, audits, or investigations as requested by management or regulators. Assist in preparing for external examinations and audits by regulatory agencies.
  • Promote and maintain positive relationships with the business units and provide information and assistance as needed to portfolio managers, other lending personnel, auditors and regulatory examiners.
  • Maintain relevant knowledge of key risk, legal, and compliance issues relevant to Bank’s lending practices and loan portfolio. 


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a business field, preferably in Finance or Accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in loan review, credit analysis, or as a regulatory examiner is required. Advanced knowledge of SBA and USDA loan structuring, documentation, and credit is highly desired.  
  • Specialized knowledge of credit products, market trends, industry standards, accounting/financial principles and internal audit practices.
  • Must comply with all Bank policies and procedures as well as applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Ability to lead, mentor and develop skills of other Bank employees.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
  • Must complete all required training, including Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-money Laundering training, suitable to their position within the bank.


Compensation is based on geographic location and individual pay decisions will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

 

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
