VP SBA Sr. Underwriting Manager

Position Summary:

The VP SBA Senior Underwriting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of an assigned SBA underwriting team and managing the pipeline of government-guaranteed loan applications through the credit process. This position ensures that underwriting activities are conducted in accordance with internal policies, SBA SOP requirements, and the bank’s credit risk appetite. The role serves as a subject matter expert and resource for SBA loan structuring, financial analysis, and underwriting strategy.


Compensation is based on geographic location and individual pay decisions will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


Essential Duties:

  • Manage the SBA underwriting process from submission to final credit decision, ensuring timely, accurate, and policy-compliant credit memoranda.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to underwriters and credit analysts, including performance management, training, and development planning.
  • Serve as a senior credit resource to assist underwriters with complex deal structures, borrower financial analysis, and eligibility determinations under SBA guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with the SVP Credit Underwriting Group Manager to ensure alignment with strategic credit goals and continuous improvement of underwriting standards.
  • Review and approve loan requests within assigned authority or recommend them for further approval, as appropriate.
  • Monitor underwriting pipeline and ensure timely processing to meet internal service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with SBA SOPs, bank credit policies, and all regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in internal audits, SBA reviews, and regulator examinations as needed, ensuring readiness and completeness of underwriting documentation.
  • Provide training and support to underwriting staff on SBA rules, financial spreading, risk assessment, and internal policy updates.
  • Assist with the recruitment and onboarding of new team members.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as loan officers, closers, operations, and credit administration to resolve issues and streamline processes.
  • Stay informed on economic, industry, and regulatory changes that impact SBA lending and underwriting.
  • Complete all required training, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering (BSA/AML) compliance training, as appropriate for the role.


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field required. MBA or relevant certifications (e.g., CPA, CFA) preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of credit underwriting experience with at least 5 years in SBA lending.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Deep knowledge of SBA 7(a) and 504 programs, SBA SOP, and relevant underwriting practices.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and credit risk assessment skills with a proven ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and discretion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and financial spreading tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to function efficiently and effectively under deadlines and stress while maintaining a professional and mature profile.


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Occasional travel as needed for training or meetings.
